Today I read on CNN a horrifying article on the physical and sexual abuse that seems to be rampant in the juvenile detention centers around the country.

Full article here: http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/04/04/juvenile.jails/index.html

Basically, the "teenage" jails we have set up here in the US are, apparently, much more neglective of their residents than normal, adult jails. You know, adults who we expect to be able to take care of themselves? I read that seven kids have died from outright neglect or manslaughter by severe beating, and in one case, a kid was denied any medical attention for his severe intestinal pains that lasted three days. I'm no doctor, but I think I would get the idea of appendicitis after at least.. you know, two days? But these two nurses were not to be convinced and have plead not guilty.

Other physical abuse cases range from shackling to beatings and suffocation as ways of subduing 13-17 year old prisoners, even if they threaten to harm themselves. Any kind of mental team or therapy seems to be mostly absent from these institutions... which... you know is probably the most important thing in reguiding these youth. These kids are here because they've dropped out of school or run away from home or haven't any family to be found. They're probably dabbling in drugs and they're in a lot of pain. This is possibly the worst solution to the problem at hand.

On THAT subject, my school recently experienced a lockdown. More on that in the next blog and what I think we could have done to avoid it.
